Why Do We Love East Cork?
1. The Beautiful Beaches
One of the first reasons why we love East Cork is because it offers beautiful and tranquil beaches. What better place to spend your Summer days than relaxing and unwinding by the seaside? Youghal offers a wide stretch of beach starting from the Front Strand all the ways to Redbarn.
From taking in the views of Youghal Lighthouse to strolling on the newly restored Boardwalk, this is a beach you won’t tire of easily.
If you’re looking for adventure, look no further than Ballycotton. Every corner you turn you will find something unique, such as a slip way known locally as ‘The Cow’, and beautiful rock pools.
Rounding Knockadoon Head, there are three beaches overlooking Ballycotton Bay. The bay is overlooked by its most prominent landmark, Ballycotton Lighthouse, which is situated on an island off the village of the same name.
From east to west the beaches are Garryvoe, Ardnahinch and Ballynamona. Garryvoe is a mixed pebble beach with very shallow waters in the bay, and it also offers fabulous warm water after a hot Summer’s day.
2. Its A Foodie’s Heaven
Do you like seafood? Then you will adore Surf & Turf in Midleton. Everything is fresh, from the lobsters and oysters in the tank as well as a tempting selection of seafood from Ballycotton.
Not only is SAGE Restaurant, in Midleton currently one of the McKenna Guide’s 100 Best Restaurants, its also renowned for its 12 mile ethos! If you have a grá for local produce and delicious food, make sure you stop by here.
Perfectly situated in the middle of Youghal Town, The Coffee Pot, is a great spot for breakfast, lunch or an afternoon snack. Whether you’re in the mood for enticing pastries, or a full Irish with the works, you can have it all here.
Head back over to Garryvoe to The Lighthouse Bistro, where you can relax all afternoon and tuck into some delicious seafood! Make sure you try the mouth watering fresh Ballycotton battered plaice with tartare sauce and chips, yum!
3. Plenty of Guided Walking Tours
What better way to discover the history of Youghal than with a Happy Feet storyteller who will take you on a memorable journey through time. Hear tales of witchcraft , piracy, famine and espionage as you walk on the footsteps of the characters who shaped the town. The storytellers are local guides with a passion for history and story telling.
The Titanic Trail in Cobh is a fantastic tour where you get to relive the Titanic timeline journey and see where the passengers embarked on their fateful journey. This tour brings you through the streets of Cobh, revealing locations and incidents directly connected to the Titanic. A fascinating and thought provoking tour to say the least.
Of course, these are just a few things we love about East Cork. This beautiful and unique part of the world has so much to offer. You will find it all in our East Cork Visitors Guide.
